End of Service

Technology is advancing at an exponential rate. Everything from compute power and internet speeds to software capabilities. Just as the speed of the internet has made old TV’s obsolete, turned phones into computers, and has allowed us to conduct business from anywhere…the advancement of hardware makes software more powerful, and the advancement of software requires more hardware capabilities. This means, to keep up, you have stay up to date with your hardware and software.

Unfortunately, vendors, such as Microsoft, seem to be shortening the lifespan of their software. Traditionally it was common to get 10 + years of support out of a Microsoft License. We are seeing this shorten, whereas Office 2019 will only be supported for 7 years. Is this the new trend? Or is this the push to a subscription base – software as a service? In the long run, it is often for the better, improving efficiencies; however, going through the change can be challenging.

New Beginnings

So, what are your options?

Keep using it.

While this may sound attractive, after all, is still works, this is very short-sighted approach. As the technology gets older, you will be faced with more issues like performance problems, possible data loss, and increased security vulnerabilities.

Update to a current version.

In most cases, this is the best option. Many suppliers make a migration path that is seamless for upgrades. Users will most likely be more comfortable and familiar with an upgraded version vs an entirely program.

Modernize and Rebuild

Sometimes, when things get so outdated, it can be worth it to look at the technology as a whole and modernize your workforce. This is often extreme and the most expensive route. However, if you let systems get too far out of date, it may be your best option.
